A mate of mine's wife approached me before Christmas & asked if I could take her husband for a fly for his Christmas present.... what do you think my answer was ;-) A week after Christmas I ran into him & asked what he thought of the gift & he was very excited, stating that he wanted to put some more $$ in to make it a good flight. So, as it turned out I threw in my bit, he put in his bit, and his wife her's and off we went.
We left Toowoomba and headed up for an orbit over his house, then off to the Glasshouse Mountains, north of Brisbane (about 10nm north of Caboolture - YCAB).
From here we tracked to YCAB and climbed to 3500' waiting for a clearance to 4500' to get over Moreton Bay. ATC was very busy dealing with an aircraft that had taken off from Ballina & was about to track right through the middle of the Tyagarah (local where I was doing parachute ops) dropzone with chutes on decent.
After her sorted that mess out, we got handed off to approach & got our clearance.
Recently I took up my son & two mates (1 young fella & 1 not so young) for a flight out to Cressbrook Dam & then back into Toowoomba for some circuits.
On friday night I went out for a quick currency check with one of the instructors at the Darling Downs Aero Club, then for an hour of circuits.
I hadn't flown at night for almost a year, so it was great to get back up in the air in the dark, even if it was doing laps.
As it turned out, I had a nice little cross wind to deal with which was good to have added to the mix as I hadn't done any takeoff's or landing's at night with a x-wind.
The night was pretty uneventful, but very enjoyable. I think it's time I talked a couple of mates into coming for a night flight over Brisbane to look at all the pretty lights.
I took one of the aeroclub's Tomahawks up for a quick currency flight on Saturday.
I flew south of Toowoomba to the training area for a practise forced landing, then flew back to Toowoomba for a touch & go on the grass strip (rwy 24). I then came around for a cross wind landing on rwy 29. I had about 15kts of crosswind from 220 so it made for some good crabbing.
I then flew up over my mate's house & my house, then back to Toowoomba for a glide approach onto rwy 24.
Due to the recent changes, I contacted a few of the gliding clubs around Toowoomba. This resulted in a good conversation with the 'Tug Master' of a club about 45mins from where I live. He is keen to have me assist with glider towing on a bi-weekly basis, however I need to have a tailwheel endoresement as they use the Piper Pawne.
Well... after selling the family home to pursue the dream of a career in aviation, attaining my CPL, MECIR & Caravan Endo, then landing a job with a Parachute Operation in the Caravan, we've put the brakes on.
